You know it’s that time of year when you gather round with your family, with laughter echoing through the air, and your cousins are playing a game of Madden. ;)
It’s Christmas. I remember the days where I was wide awake in my sheets waiting for Santa Claus to slide down the chimney and eat the plate of cookies I left for him. I would dream of opening that mysterious present, drinking peppermint hot chocolate, and wearing glittery nail polish - each finger had a different color.
I looked forward to this every year. But you just can’t help but wonder, is this the true meaning of Christmas? Spending time with family and shopping for Christmas presents are exciting, but what do we truly celebrate Christmas for? Or actually, who?
It isn’t about getting that new video game that was just released and it isn’t about eating infinite tiramisu cheesecake until you burst. It’s about something greater than this. Something bigger than all of us.
Remember that story you used to hear when you were a toddler? The story where a baby was born in a manger? Well, this is what Christmas is all about.
A King was born. His name was Jesus. He was born in a humble place, in a manger because all the inns were full. He was a gift from God. God sent Him here, to live among us. I’m sure all of us has told a lie, disobeyed our parents, or became mad at one another. But Jesus was perfect. He died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins which enabled us to have salvation.
Christmas is about the birth of a King - Jesus Christ. The tradition of gift-giving started with God. God loved us and He gave a gift, His very own Son, to die on the cross so our sins are forgiven. Isn’t it incredible?
It saddens me to see the world as it is today. Slowly, this Christmas story is neglected, replaced by material goods and worldly desires.
But remember the true meaning of Christmas, and be sure to spread the word around. <3
